Description
Design
If the iPhone 14 seems familiar, that’s because it is. The Apple iPhone 14 looks identical to its predecessor in almost every regard. The iPhone 14 Plus looks just the same except for its larger size. Same colours, the same finishes, just a bigger version.
The most notable differences from the iPhone 13 are the colours, the cutout at the top of the display and the rear cameras. The colour changes are subtle: A brighter Product(Red), for instance, joins Midnight, Starlight and Purple. The fifth colour is a more pastel shade of Blue. While the iPhone 14 Pro series gained the Dynamic Island, the iPhone 14’s notch reflects a minor redesign to become narrower, with a deeper cutout.
The iPhone 14s have a glossy chassis, unlike the matte finish found on the iPhone Pro models. Both have an aluminium frame. The standard iPhone 14 weighs 1.2 ounces lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro, a weight difference you can actually notice when holding the phone in one hand. Similarly, the iPhone 14 Plus weighs 1.3 ounces less than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, an even more palpable difference.
The iPhone 14 has a pair of cameras on the back. Neither seems actually to be new. In this case, the main 12MP camera appears to be lifted from the iPhone 13 Pro. That means that compared to the iPhone 13, it has a brighter f/1.5 aperture and larger 1.9µm pixels. So, an overall brighter sensor that’s likely on par with the iPhone 13 Pros.
Then there is the 12MP ultrawide camera, with its 120-degree field of view and f/2.4 aperture. It seems to be identical to the ultrawide on the vanilla iPhone 13 so we expect similar performance.
Not necessarily identical, though, since Apple has a new processing pipeline for the iPhone 14 generation. It is called the Photonic Engine. That’s just a fancy name for Apple’s latest HDR stacking technology. The older version used to be called Deep Fusion. In comparison, the Photonic Engine merges more images into one and also uses uncompressed images for the merge process.
